Wheaten Overview

Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers

Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers are graceful, strong, and well coordinated. Considered a playful and friendly terrier, Wheatens make great watchdogs and bark at the arrival of guests.

Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers are alert and happy; usually they are very loving with children and get along well with other dogs. However (like any other breed) a timid owner, who does not correct negative behavior, may end up with an aggressive dog.

Wheatens have a puppy attitude that remains with them throughout their life. They are sweet-tempered, easy-going, and self-confident. It is important that you keep in mind that this breed needs to be taught when young. But, older Wheaties can also learn what is and is not acceptable behavior.

Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers are very intelligent! And, they will quickly understand what is required of them. Wheatens have a straightforward nature and so they need to be handled in a straightforward manner. With that said, Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers bond closely with their family and make great companions. Few things are more comforting than lying on the couch next to your Wheaten(s). Yes, many of our club members own more than one. And that is reflective of a national trend. Many Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier owners find such joy in the breed that they often adopt a second and third dog.

You should socialize your Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier with other dogs while he or she is a young puppy. In order to have a well-behaved Wheaten, you must be firm, but calm. Also, you must be consistent and confident with the dog. If not, the dog may easily take over the home and will be hard to control.

Finally, we refer to the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier’s most endearing trait as the wheaten’ greetin’. Wheatens jump on you to greet you. This behavior is very difficult to extinguish and is ingrained deep in the breed. We celebrate the wheaten’ greetin’ and love all Wheatens who can’t wait for their owners to come home to greet them!
